Attorney General Steve Marshall Bio
Steve Marshall became the 48th AG of Alabama in 2017. He is a native of Atmore and graduated from UNC at Chapel Hill and UA School of Law. He served Marshall County as District Attorney from 2001 – 2017. When he was sworn in at age 36, he became the second youngest DA in Alabama.
During his time as DA, he established a reputation for being tough on crime. He founded the Marshall Co. Major Crimes Unit, the Marshall Co. Computer Forensics Lab and the Marshall Co. Crystal Meth Task Force. He was instrumental in passing legislation that required a driver’s license for AL residents to purchase ingredients for making crystal meth. The legislation also created a database for such purchases and led to a 90% reduction in the number of crystal meth labs in the state over the past five years.
He also played a major role in the Brody Act, which holds criminals who kill or injure a mother’s unborn baby accountable for two crimes. He was a strong supporter of the Marshall Co. Coalition Against Domestic Violence and successfully pushed for passage of Kelley’s Law, which makes it a capital crime to murder someone who has a protective order against the offender.
AG Marshall has also served as chairman of the AL Criminal Justice Information System, and he is a member of the AL Sentencing Commission.
