Upcoming Court Decisions
We want to focus on a couple of court decisions that are coming up in the next six months that could greatly impact healthcare costs starting in 2019 and going forward. We work with individual and corporate clients that have concerns on healthcare costs. Last year, the Affordable Care Act was one vote away from being repealed. When the Trump Administration lost that battle legislatively they turned to the courts with the idea in mind that Americans should always have a choice. There are several battles going on right now that could open the market place with the ability to bid and get health insurance. The point of attack is to get an offer out in the market that allows for a shorter-term insurance plan. For example, if you have a child that has just graduated from college or professional school and won’t start a permanent job for a few months, then at that point they can go on someone else’s healthcare plan just for that gap in time. Another thought is that if you are younger and healthier you should be able to buy coverage on your own and decide what you need. In corporate America healthcare cost is the number two cost behind payroll. It could be a major impact on business if some of these court decisions can lower cost and it could also have an impact on portfolios in 2019.
