An interview with John McMillan
On October 4, 2016 Greg Powell, CIMA, President and CEO of Fi Plan Partners sat down to talk with John McMillan, AL Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries. Over the course of this interview Greg and John discussed what are the biggest issue facing these industries today, the future of Alabama’s timber industry, the buy local, buy fresh trend, the future of Alabama politics, and his involvement with it.
John McMillan background
John McMillan grew up in the rural community of Stockton, Alabama in Baldwin County. After graduating from Baldwin County High School, McMillan attended Rhodes College where he earned a BA in economics.
Interest in agriculture
His interest in agriculture began at an early age while working on his family’s farm and in his father’s sawmill. After college, he continued to work at the family sawmill for nearly 20 years. Over the years, McMillan’s life’s work continued to focus on agri-business, forest products, wildlife protection, natural resource management and the protection of private property rights.
The public service of John McMillan
McMillan has served on the Baldwin County Commission, was twice elected as a State Representative, served as Commissioner of the Alabama Department of Conservation & Natural Resources, and served 14 years on the State Personnel Board.
During his time as the Commissioner of the Alabama Department of Conservation & Natural Resources, McMillan was instrumental in the creation of the Alabama Trust Fund, a state trust to preserve the proceeds from offshore oil and gas leases.
In addition to his public service, McMillan was Executive Vice President of the Alabama Forestry Association for over 20 years. McMillan’s passion for the protection of private property rights was put on display when the Alabama Forestry Association played a pivotal role in the defeat of Amendment 1 in 2003, an attempt at the largest property tax increase in the history of the state.
McMillan was elected as Commissioner of the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries in 2010 and re-elected in 2014.
